What is Distribution transformer?
Distribution transformers is used at the last stage of AC electrical power distribution service.These transformers provide the neccessary step down voltage of 230V needed for distribution at commercial and residential estalishments.There are different kinds of distribution transformers available like single phase, 3-phase, plinth-mounted, pole-mounted transformer.The design of distribution transformer mainly depends on the requirement and budget of the user.
Single phase distribution transformer
A single phase distribution transformer is primarily designed for residential and small commercial buildings to effectively improve the quality and reliability of the electrical distribution systems.it is used in places were 3 phase supply is not required .Designed to have excellent short circuit and thermal withstand capabilities.It has only one bushing on top, connected to one of the three primary phases. The other end of the primary winding is connected to the transformer’s case, which is connected to the neutral wire of the system, and is also grounded.
In delta type single phase transformer there are two bushings connected to two of the three primary phase wires, the voltage across the primary winding is the phase-to-phase voltage.In delta transformer if any one phase of he primary fails then the other phase backfeeds the failed phase hence suitable precautions and protection devices should be used to prevent accidents.
A three phase distribution transformer is a step down electrical transformer that is used to carry electrical energy from a primary distribution system to a secondary distribution system or direct power supply consumer.These transformers limits the voltage supply of the primary circuit to the amount of voltage desired by the consumer.The amount of this voltage keeps on changing and can be different for commercial consumers, residential consumers and light industry consumers. Pole Mounted Distribution Transformers
Pole mounted transformers are electrical distribution transformers that are mounted on an electrical service pole made of wood or concrete and are usually single phase transformer. Pole mounted transformers are used for converting distribution voltage od 11KV to the 230v volt power commonly used by homes and small commercial installations.Pole mounted transformers primary and secondary windings of the transformer, can either be copper or aluminum or one can be copper and the other aluminum. Pole mounted electrical transformers are more commonly used in rural area. These transformers range from 16 kVA to 100kVA and transform 11,000 to 33,000 volts down to a low voltage of 415 volts. Pole mounted transformers are reasonably small in size and mass so that it is easy to install them on single pole structures, and larger units on two-pole structures, approximately 5 meters above the ground. This makes the transformers inaccessible, reducing the risk of injury to animals and people and minimizing vandalism. With exposure to harsh climate conditions and situated in remote areas, reliability has been built into the specification of these electrical transformers. Tanks are shaped to reduce accumulation of water and corrosive materials. Protective coatings are applied to tanks to reduce corrosion. In the coastal regions tanks are zinc sprayed. In highly corrosive areas tanks are made from Stainless or 3CR12 steel. The vector sum of resistance and reactance which limits the current flow in an alternating current circuit; when banking single-phase pole mount transformers, impedance can be critical to ensure proper balanced loading of the three transformers in the bank and when pole mounted transformers are used in parallel operation.
Beyond 200KA the transformers get heavier hence mounting on a pole is not recommended such distribution transformers are mounted on a platform/plinth normally made of concrete. The HT sise of the transformer is electrically protected by a horn gap fuse and is switching of the transformer is done from the ground though a mechnism connecting the breakers. A fencing is provided around the transformer to protect it from animals and unauthorized access.
